Arriva wins Cross Country franchise

13 July 2007

The Department of Transport has awarded the New Cross Country rail franchise to Arriva plc from 11th November 2007 for eight years and four months. The DfT will pay the company a subsidy of £1.056bn.

The Cross Country franchise runs from Aberdeen to Penzance and from Stansted to Cardiff, covering around 2,414km (1,500 miles) and 100 stations. As part of the deal, Arriva is committed to deliver 35% extra capacity, which will include modifying Voyagers. It has said it will also introduce extra services to Stansted Airport, accept smartcard tickets issued by other train companies and bring in web-based ticketing. Rather predictably it intends to increase unregulated fares by up to 3.5%.
