Driverless tube train plans risk safety

A confidential London Underground strategy paper leaked to the media earlier this week reveals radical plans for the tube network including proposals for the automation of trains with ‘no in cab operators’ and the replacement of drivers by ‘tube attendants’ in addition to substantial job losses and huge increases in fares.

ASLEF General Secretary Keith Norman commented ‘these proposals are an affront to the highly skilled and professional men and women who operate trains across the tube network.’

He added, ‘train drivers are vital to public safety on London Underground and any attempts to undermine them will be opposed vigorously by this union.’
