Bombardier Job Cuts a Hammer Blow to UK Rail Industry

Rail manufacturer Bombardier’s announcement today that 1500 jobs are to be lost at its Derby factory is devastating news for the UK rail industry as well as many thousands of workers across the Midlands supply chain. The move comes following the award of the Thameslink rolling stock contract to German rival Siemens last week.

ASLEF General Secretary Keith Norman said ‘the Government’s blind adherence to external competition rules, over the award of the Thameslink contract is a huge blow to the integrity of the UK rail industry as well as thousands of jobs in the Midlands. The government seems to have completely misinterpreted international frameworks that should apply equally to French, German and Japanese manufacturers, yet you can’t imagine those countries shafting their manufacturers in such an appalling manner.
