ASLEF welcomes Labour criticism of railway finances

20 February 2012

Ed Miliband criticised train company finances during his speech to Welsh Labour’s conference in Cardiff at the weekend saying that it was wrong for public money to support train companies during loss making periods while taxpayers benefit little in profitable times.

ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan said, ‘I welcome Ed’s comments on rail industry finances. Labour must ensure public money is used responsibly and accountably for the long term good of the railway and not as a short-term private sector subsidy as is currently the case.’

An ASLEF motion calling for the Welsh Rail franchise to be run on a not-for-dividend basis was unanimously adopted by the conference.
