Tosh McDonald, ASLEF's executive committee member for District 4, gave a barnstorming speech at the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy's fringe meeting in the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton on Sunday night.

Michael Meacher, Labour MP for Oldham West & Royton, who was sitting next to Tosh on the platform, smiled broadly as Tosh laid into the Tories for wrecking our society as they have wrecked the British economy.

Tosh called for a return to the radical values of the Labour Party, a return of Britain’s railways to public ownership, and the return of a Labour government at the next general election in 2015.

A Labour government, he added, committed to a socialist programme to celebrate the achievements of Clement Attlee’s radical government – ‘it will be 70 years, comrades, since that historic election in 1945 when Britain next goes to the polls’ – which did so much to rebuild Britain after the Second World War.
