ASLEF welcomes increased funding for level-crossing safety

31 October 2013

“More needs to be done but we are glad to see that the ORR is taking this issue seriously and has responded positively to our call for more money to be spent on improving what remains the most dangerous element of our network,” Mick commented.

The ORR’s final draft of 2014-2019 rail funding increased the amount to be spent on level crossings by £32m to a total of £109m.

Whilst ASLEF was pleased to hear that 500 crossings would now be closed, and many hundreds more will be modified to improve safety, the Union will continue to campaign for more to be done to ensure that the 8,000 levels crossings within our network are reduced in number or made as safe as possible.

This development came on the back of a Law Commission report which has called for a quicker and easier process for closing dangerous crossings.

“ASLEF will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure a safer rail network and this news will be welcomed by all,” noted Mick.
