ASLEF REGRETS LABOUR LIVINGSTONE DECISION

02 September 2005

ASLEF General Secretary Mick Rix deplored the decision by Labour"s national executive committee to refuse to readmit London Mayor Ken Livingstone to the Party.

"This is a short-sighted decision drive more by pique and pride than any serious consideration of what is best for London or the Labour Party," Mr Rix said. "The only beneficiary will be Stephen Norris and the Tory Party.

"If a split Labour vote lets a director of such a wretched company as Jarvis take over the capital, the blame must rest with those who took this decision today. I hope that the party leadership may yet be prevailed upon to reconsider the question before the mayoral selection process is concluded."
