Chris Grayling is being dishonest

03 October 2016

In his speech to the Conservative Party Conference Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling today accused rail union leaders of misleading their members and opposing the modernisation of the rail network. He also claimed union leaders do not care or want a good deal for passengers.

Responding to the comments ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan said ‘Chris Grayling is being dishonest and misleading passengers by refusing to take responsibility for his government’s role in the Southern rail crisis. It is his Department which is forcing Southern to remove guards from its trains and standing by this discredited company and system against all reason and logic.’

Mick added ‘my union supports investment in rail and the modernisation of the network for the benefit of passengers and rail employees. We remain ready to talk and negotiate a way forward but Mr Grayling’s comments today only inflame an already difficult situation and will do nothing to help long suffering passengers.’
