ASLEF calls on Grayling to do right by Wales

23 August 2017

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, says the Conservative government must invest in our railways and stop letting down the people of Wales. He was speaking out after all 22 Labour MPs in South Wales signed a letter urging the government to reverse its decision not to electrify the railway line from Cardiff to Swansea.

Mick said: ‘The decision to renege on the pledge to electrify the main line all the way to Swansea is as perverse and ridiculous as it is indefensible. This country needs a modern railway, and a proper infrastructure, fit for the 21st century.

‘Chris Grayling, the Transport Secretary, and his department are saying that the people of South Wales don’t count. He should do the right thing and electrify the line to Swansea; address the historical underfunding of the Welsh rail network; and honour the agreement he made with the Welsh government to secure a new and sustainable franchise for Wales and the Borders.’
