ASLEF welcomes cross-Europe rail working conditions

01 July 2005

ASLEF has welcomed the announcement that their will be common minimum standards on driving and rest time for mobile railway workers in European Union countries.

‘We have argued for this measure for over two years,’ said the union’s acting General Secretary Keith Norman. ‘Our major priority at ASLEF is the safety of the rail system and our members. This is a sensible measure which will help towards that goal.’

The announcement came from the Council of Social Affairs and Employment Ministers following meetings convened in accordance with the European Social Dialogue machinery.

A familiar but regrettable footnote is that the United Kingdom abstained from voting.

The European Transport Federation said it hoped that this did not reflect a general non-acceptance of European social partner decisions.
