Equality

ASLEF has a genuine commitment to the implementation of equal opportunities in the railway industry.

However, it is apparent that within the grade of Train Driver which constitutes the overwhelming majority of ASLEF members, very few women and black and ethnic minority people are employed. And it is very difficult to estimate the number of members whose sexual orientation does not correspond to the perceived 'heterosexual norm'.

In each of these sections of our membership, the issues of equality of opportunity, harassment, pay, maternity and parental rights, pensions, gender specific health and safety etc. have a particular impact. ASLEF must be at the forefront of addressing these fundamental trades union issues from a position of strength, and this requires that more research is focused on ascertaining the needs of these members.

ASLEF has four equality representative committee's that represent area's of minority within the rail industry. These are Women, Black and Ethnic, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered and Retired. Each committee has an elected member from each of the eight districts who meet 3 times a year to discuss issues raised in their districts, support local and national campaigns. More information about each committee can be found by clicking on the left hand navigation bar.

A limited number of the TUC's Trans Memorial ribbons have been made available for ASLEF members to buy at a bargain price of £1 each. The ribbons have been launched for LBT history month which takes place in February. If you would like to purchase a ribbon send a cheque for £1 made payable to ‘ASLEF LGBTCC Imprest Account’ to ASLEF Head Office.
