Budget cuts risk slump says union
22 Jun 2010
The spending cuts announced in today’s budget (22nd June) will lead to hundreds of thousands of job losses and could cause severe damage to the economic recovery says train drivers’ union ASLEF.
General Secretary Keith Norman said ‘the Chancellor has today offered little support to Britain’s struggling economy and the millions of working people who fear for their futures. The depth of the cuts announced will, in fact, hurt the economy going forward by reducing future revenues and offering little improvement to the long term budget position.’
Keith added: ‘With interest rates at a historic low we needed a budget to sustain the recovery with investment in infrastructure such as rail to boost employment and economic growth in the long term. What we got were policies which will increase unemployment and lead to more economic uncertainty.’
