Courses for 2008/2009
Listed below are forthcoming courses. If you require any further information on any of these courses please contact the ASLEF Head Office and speak to the Education Dept.
Getting active in ASLEF - A course for new workplace representatives, including Health & Safety Reps and Union Learning Reps, new branch officers. It is also aimed at members who are interested in taking a more active role in ASLEF and would like to find out more. The course will cover:
- What ASLEF stands for
- How your union is structured and how decisions are made
- The different roles, responsibilities and rights of representatives and officers
- How members are represented individually and collectively
- Recruiting members and building union organisation
It is run in a friendly and informal way and will involve practical activities and working in groups. Don’t expect to be listening to long lectures. Skills development and confidence building is an important element of this course. You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn this way. There are no exams yet you do have the opportunity to get a recognised qualification via the TUC scheme if you want to keep evidence of your learning – it’s up to you.
London: 2 consecutive days - February 23rd & 24th 2009 at the WEA, 4 Luke Street, London EC2A 4XW. Closing date for applications 6th February 2009.
Employment Law - A two day course for Local Reps and Company Council Reps in District 2. To be held on two consecutive Mondays, the course will cover:
- Understanding contracts of employment
- Individual employment rights
- Update on developments in employment law
It is run in a friendly and informal way and will involve practical activities and working in groups. Don’t expect to be listening to long lectures. Skills development and confidence building is an important element of this course. You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn this way. The course also gives you the opportunity to gain Open College Network Credits which can be used to obtain nationally recognised qualifications.
Glasgow: 2 x Mondays – January 19th and 26th 2009 at Trade Union Studies Department, Stow College, 75 Hotspur Street, Maryhill, Glasgow G20 8LJ. Closing date for applications January 9th 2009.
