Education & Training
Why should I learn?
If your thinking about learning something new but are still not sure read the below piece from a member who has recently undertaken a course through the union...
Wigan train driver, Peter Leyland aged 50, says “It’s never too late to learn” since he started going on ASLEF Education courses. Peter has worked on the railway for over 30 years and decided to try a course after attending at Open Day event at Wallgate Station. The event was organised and run by local Union Learning Rep Graham Ibbetson.
Peter says :he enrolled on the skills for life English course to gain self confidence and to help in report writing, due to the ever changing aspects of the train drivers role.
Peter has recently passed his English Level 1 and is looking forward to enrolling on his Level 2. Peter, along with four other Wigan drivers has also completed the Introduction to Plumbing Course. The day proved very informative and the group learnt a lot, they even had a celebrity tutor in the form of former Wigan and England Rugby League player Mick Cassidy.
People take the English and Maths courses for a number of reasons, like up skilling for promotion, helping the kids with their home work, or just for the pleasure of learning. If you have not done any learning for a while these courses are an excellent way to get started and are a good stepping stone to further or higher education.
