Proud to Educate

What is ASLEF – Proud to Educate?

"ASLEF - Proud to Educate" is the name of the ASLEF learning project which is funded through the Government from the Union Learning Fund.

The project will embed the Governments lifelong learning agenda and the role of the Union Learning Representative (ULR) within ASLEF. This will be done by mainstreaming ULRs into the union structure and organising education that is relevant to ASLEF members on both a personal and professional level.

The aim of the project is to encourage train drivers to gain qualifications linked to their job and give them the skills for the future of train driving.
We will do this by gaining long term commitment from employers through negotiated learning agreements and support ULRs co-ordinating learning within their workplaces.

We will be working closely with members, industrial reps, H&S reps and ASLEF full time employees. This will provide a secure network of support for ULRs and give them an opportunity to gain skills that will allow them to provide a better service to ASLEF members and take ownership of the learning agenda.

What is the role of the Union Learning Representative (ULR)?

The union learning rep (ULR) is a new category of union activist which the unions have developed to promote learning at work. They are trained in advising members on learning needs and opportunities and have been leading the way in raising interest in training and development, especially among lower skilled workers and those with literacy and numeracy needs.

What are the benefits?

  • Information about learning opportunities available inside and outside the workplace, from a colleague who is independent, trusted and familiar to them and a source of reliable information.
  • The opportunity to get advice in the workplace from someone who will treat everything they say in confidence
  • The chance to improve Numeracy, Literacy and IT skills and to gain a National Vocational Qualification that recognises the work they do everyday
  • Improve self confidence, esteem and motivation
  • Helping to fulfill individual potential
  • Continued professional development
