October demonstrations for ‘An End to Austerity and a Future That Works'
London and Glasgow 20 October
Austerity and government spending cuts are failing as a way of solving the country’s economic problems. We were told that spending cuts were needed to get the economy growing, yet they have driven the UK back into recession and decline. To close the deficit we need a healthy growing economy that generates tax income, but the coalition government does not have the policies to build an economy that can generate jobs, increase incomes and protect pensions.
The government should be promoting new industries and encouraging companies to raise pay, invest in training and the create jobs – especially for young people. It should be cracking down on tax evasion by big companies and the super-rich and tackle the growing inequality between the super-rich and everyone else.
In spite of all this, government is still refusing to change course from their dangerous and damaging programme of cuts and austerity.
ASLEF joins the TUC and other national and regional campaigners to support those most vulnerable and disadvantaged by government cuts.
