First UK Train Drivers to get the new ITQ qualification: 3 Sep 2008It’s always been a problem for drivers to get qualifications that are recognised outside of the driving grade. None of us know what is round the corner in life, we may fail a medical and be removed from driving, or decide that we would like to progress or change our career altogether. A lot of us possess skills that go unrecognised. Therefore when the chance came along to run a pilot course of the new Level 2 ITQ qualification, we jumped at it.

Learning bursaries available to ASLEF members: 27 Aug 2008ASLEF has money available for a limited number of learning bursaries. These will be up to a maximum of £150 towards the cost of higher education learning.

LUL Development Day: 5 Aug 2008The Union Learning Representatives (ULRs) from London Underground met at Arkwright Road on the 23rd July for a Development Day. The purpose of the day was to see what the ULRs had been doing in their depots, how they had been supporting ASLEF members within the Underground and to find better ways to communicate with each other and ASLEF members.

Open University - 10% discount for all union members!: 14 Jul 2008Members of unions affiliated to the TUC, ICTU, STUC and WTUC and who are new to studying with the OU can obtain a 10% discount on Level 1 courses that carry 30 and 60 credit points.

Adult learners week: 14 Jul 2008ASLEF ULR’s all over the country have been busy in the run up to this national event. Setting up sessions and activities as diverse as healthy eating to train simulator tasters.

Learning at Work: 14 Jul 2008Both the days held at Norwich and Ipswich got off to a great start and were well supported at both locations.

The Icelandic model of lifelong learning: 30 May 2008Lead learning rep Chris Nutty travelled to Iceland to discover what lifelong learning practices were in place and if we could use some of their ideas to better the system in the UK.

Dundee Open Day: 22 May 2008ASLEF Union Learner Rep Driver Colin McAteer held an open day at the Rail Learning Centre at Dundee on Thursday 22nd May, to celebrate learning at work day.

Introduction Conference: 28 Mar 200816 ASLEF ULRs and 3 Company Council Reps met in Loughborough for a one day conference on the 28th March 2008. The purpose of the conference was to give the delegates an introduction to the new ASLEF Union Learning Fund project 'Proud to Educate'.
