SWT strike cancelled
20/07/2006ASLEF has been forced to cancel the strike action under threat of legal action from South West Trains. The company had threatened to apply for an injunction to prevent the action taking place on the grounds that the wording used in the ballot paper was technically incorrect and, significantly, to sue the union for costs so far incurred during the Waterloo dispute.

18/07/2006ASLEF’s dispute over managers driving trains is to escalate – with the union calling for 24 hour strikes throughout the days of 28 and 31 July, and 11 and 14 August by all its 900 members working for South West Trains.

18/07/2006In an unexpected outbreak of sanity, the Conservatives have admitted they were wrong about at least some aspects of railway privatisation. Specifically, Shadow transport secretary Chris Grayling has conceded that creating one company to manage the rail tracks and another 25 to run the trains has led to too much time spent debating contracts rather than improving the service. ‘Oddly enough, this statement by the Conservative Party is true, ‘says ASLEF leader Keith Norman. ‘But it is only part of the truth. Waste is an integral part of a privatised railway.’

14/07/2006The ballot result recently recieved from the Electoral Reform Society regarding the South West Trains dispute over managers driving trains has resulted in a YES vote for industrial action.

13/07/2006Keith Norman said he found it ‘very disturbing’ that seven out of ten ‘leisure’ passengers opt not to travel by train because of the cost of the ticket - with 44% of those choosing to travel by car instead.

Union anger at reduced fine for Hatfield firm
05/07/2006Keith Norman, the general secretary of train drivers union ASLEF said that there was ‘no justice’ in today’s decision by the Court of Appeal to reduce by a quarter the £10 million fine imposed on Balfour Beatty for its culpability in the October 2000 Hatfield rail crash.
