Derailment on London Underground

05 July 2007

There was a derailment on London Underground’s Central Line just after nine o’clock this morning. The incident occurred on a westbound train between Mile End and Bethnal Green. 6 of the 8 carriages were derailed – but fortunately none of the 400 passengers has been reported to be significantly injured. Passenger walked to either Bethnal Green or Mile End.

There are unconfirmed reports that the driver saw an object on the track before the incident.

Normally this would be a reasonably high-speed part of the journey (around 35 mph) but the amount of traffic in the area at this time of day reduced speeds.

The Central Line is likely to be severely disrupted for some time.

Keith Norman said London Organiser Steve Grant will be heavily involved in any investigation of the incident.
