London Midland – Sunday working

07 September 2009

After months of poor performance at the start of the year, the result of track upgrades and poor weather conditions, London Midland approached ASLEF six months ago to discuss workloads and especially voluntary Sunday working for train drivers.

The company introduced enhanced rates of pay for Sundays for a period of time that was not defined. The union, having not made a claim or pushed the point, noted the change.

The enhanced rates were withdrawn last weekend and only a handful of drivers and other staff opted for voluntary overtime, causing severe disruption.

The company did not alert the union they were experiencing difficulties finding volunteers.

The company’s sense of urgency is displayed by the fact that as of 1530 today (Monday) London Midland has not contacted the union’s officers about the problems.
