New carriages set to arrive late

01 March 2010

ASLEF is concerned that the Government has postponed a £7.5 billion contract to upgrade the rolling stock on the East Coast and Great Western lines following anxieties over the state of the public finances until after the election. Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has ordered an independent review of the deal for 1,400 new carriages.

General Secretary Keith Norman said ‘This decision once again demonstrates our inability to take a strategic approach to the long term needs of the railway particularly how we resolve the acute problem of a lack of capacity on the network.

Keith added ‘passengers and rail workers deserve train carriages fit for the 21st century not Intercity 125s from the 1970s. The Government should be prioritising investment in rail not only to increase capacity but also to boost economic growth and employment in these recessionary times.’
