Newcastle education event ‘a model’

14 September 2012

Mick Whelan says that the union learning event at Newcastle today is ‘a welcome step in a progressive direction’ which he hopes will be a model and example for those train companies who have been less enthusiastic about live-long learning.

Newcastle's Central Station has become ‘the education station' through a partnership between East Coast Trains and its trade unions. Over 40 staff will be presented with certificates for their achievements in literacy, numeracy and IT by ECT’s Managing Director, ASLEF’s general secretary Mick Whelan and Northern TUC Regional Secretary Kevin Rowan.

‘I am delighted for the success of these learners, and I hope today’s ceremony will encourage those companies who have been reluctant to back similar initiatives to take up the example,’ Mick says.
