Union unimpressed by NR bonus refusal

06 February 2012

News that the board of Network Rail has decided to postpone this Friday’s members’ meeting has been welcomed by ASLEF’s general secretary Mick Whelan. ‘It is encouraging that they at least appear to have tactical nouse – even if they lack other qualities,’ he said.

He added that the NR directors decisions on timing were at fault if it were indeed the case, as NR Chief Executive David Higgins said today, that the directors had decided a week ago to ‘forego any entitlement and allocate the money to the safety improvement fund for level crossings.’ Mick said in similar circumstances he would have announced this before he was obliged to do so from under a heap of public criticism.

When the size of the projected bonuses was announced last week Mick said that the rail chiefs were ‘bankers’, condemning the figures as ‘as unacceptable as those paid to bankers like Stephen Hester’.
