Pay freezes stop growth

Yesterday’s Budget was a lost opportunity to expand the UK economy and help the country out of recession, says ASLEF’s general secretary Mick Whelan. ‘As a trade unionist, I instinctively back working people who seek to maintain or improve their living standards. Putting a cap of 1% on the pay of public sector workers until 2016 is not only insulting and de-motivating; it also denies an injection of spending power into poorer communities. It means public servants in deprived areas have no extra cash to spend on local products which would reinvigorate their communities.
