Popular policy

10 September 2013

Andy Botham, company council, East Midlands Trains, told delegates at a packed Action for Rail fringe meeting at the TUC in Bournemouth, that bringing Britain’s railways back into public ownership is an overwhelmingly popular public policy. Andy, speaking from the floor, said: ‘In a recent poll 70% of the population said they want to renationalise the railways. It’s a popular public policy! We don’t have to convince the public; we have to convince the politicians.’

Andy was sitting with two other ASLEF delegates, Nigel Roebuck and Alan Donnelly, and executive committee member Marz Colombini, listening to a Question Time-style Q&A session chaired by Sarah Veale.

The panel on the platform included ASLEF national organiser Simon Weller; Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle; RMT general secretary Bob Crow; TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes; Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland; and Sukhdev Johal, Reader in the School of Management at Royal Holloway, University of London, and co-author of The Great Train Robbery.
