Look in the Mirror

11 September 2013

The Labour Party is under pressure to take Britain’s railways back into public ownership if the party gets back into power, reports the Daily Mirror this morning. Mark Ellis, the paper’s industrial and transport correspondent, quotes Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle saying ‘Rail privatisation has been a disaster’ and Simon Weller, ASLEF’s national organiser, saying ‘The example of the East Coast line shows the case for public ownership is compelling.’

Mark also reports: ‘Last month the Mirror revealed that only one-fifth of voters support the coalition’s plans to sell off the East Coast franchise. Even 48% of Tories are against privatisation with only 28% in favour. Since 2009, the state-run line has returned £602million to the Treasury – £220 million more than the Virgin-operated West Coastline.’
