Ahead of today's announcement by Sir David Higgins, chairman of HS2 Ltd, that he thinks work on construction of the new line should begin in the north at the same time as in the south, ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan backed Sir David's plea. Speaking to the Sunday People yesterday, Mick said: 'Sir David is right. Let's get as much of this built as possible and create a great railway. We believe HS2 should benefit the whole country.'
