'Cynics will suggest that far from being a proper attempt to build on HS1, and HS2, this is just a political stunt ahead of the general election next year to shore up the Conservative vote in the north.‘The whole of the north-east and north-west of England is crying out for investment, as are many other parts of Britain, but has been starved of funds by the Tories and their Lib Dem partners in the coalition who have ushered in a Conservative Age of Austerity. ‘People want to use Britain’s railways – passengers and, increasingly, companies for freight –but I will only believe that the Chancellor means what he says when he puts the money in place to build a better railway to build a better Britain.’
