ASLEF welcomes Ed's pledge

13 April 2015

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, welcomed the Labour Party manifesto launched by Labour leader Ed Miliband in Manchester today.

Mick said: ‘ASLEF welcomes the Labour manifesto that gives the opportunity for the public sector to operate trains in the interest of the travelling public and the taxpayer after twenty years of failure geared towards the vested interests.’

On rail, the manifesto provides for a public sector operator to be able to run train services in Britain – just as the East Coast did successfully for five years, returning £1billion to the Treasury – and for a costed one-year freeze on fares, in contrast to the Tories’ uncosted five-year ‘freeze’ announced which is, in real terms, a guaranteed increase (fares will rise with the RPI).

Mick added: ‘We also welcome the sections on workers’ rights and the return to putting justice back within reach of ordinary people. This is a document for everyone – not just for the few!’
