Blame Network Rail not train drivers

16 April 2015

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, has made a plea to passengers to blame Network Rail, not drivers, when trains run at 20mph because of ‘too much sun.’

Mick said: ‘Network Rail’s inability to get its infrastructure right doesn’t just impact on passengers, but on all of us who work on the railway, including drivers who have to get home, too, at the end of their shift.

‘We sympathise with the plight of passengers who have been affected. It’s not that hard, with the right planning, and the right investment, to make the railway work properly for all of us who use, work in, and depend on this key industry.

‘When trains are told to run at 20mph it’s easy for commuters to blame the driver. But it’s not our fault. They should blame Network Rail, not the train drivers.’
