ASLEF reaction to Greater Anglia shortlist

02 June 2015

The Department for Transport has announced a shortlist of three train operating companies – Abellio East Anglia; First East Anglia; and National Express – for the Greater Anglia franchise. Rail Minister Claire Perry claims they have ‘ambitious plans for the franchise.’

‘Hardly,’ says Mick Whelan. ‘Both First Group and National Express have wriggled out of millions of pounds of responsibilities to the taxpayer in the past and shouldn’t even be allowed to bid for rail franchises. National Express used to run the franchise and left a toxic legacy. It beggars belief that they should be shortlisted yet again! Giving it to the Dutch state backed Abellio means profits go out of this country to support the Dutch railway and subsidise Dutch taxpayers.

‘This shortlist demonstrates, once again, that failure is no barrier to future success in the rail industry. It’s the same old discredited companies and the same old discredited system.’
