Union welcomes rail debate in Labour leadership election

05 August 2015

Labour leadership candidate Andy Burham MP has pledged to back the ‘progressive renationalisation’ of the railways if elected Labour leader. He is the second leadership candidate to support a strong Labour rail offer following Jeremy Corbyn’s commitment to full renationalisation of the railways.

ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan said ‘It’s good to hear that Andy is looking at a more radical Labour rail policy and I am glad that the leadership contest is having a serious debate about what the Party’s stance on rail should be.’

Mick added ‘A strong position on rail will be crucial to Labour’s political and economic credibility in the years ahead. The lesson from the general election is that the Party’s message needs to be clear and simple and something that voters understand. Public ownership. You can’t control what you don’t own.’
