ASLEF on the autumn statement

25 November 2015

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, has responded to today’s autumn statement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne.

Mick said: ʻWhen is the government going to look after the people of this country? The figures out today say that even with billion of pounds of additional destruction to the vital services that people need we believe the government will still be billions of pounds short of their targets and time scales.

ʻNow is a time for a more structured and humane solution that delivers for communities and workers. We need proper employment in real jobs and real salaries, that do not subsidise poor employers, and allow the dignity that will create growth.

ʻWe cannot have fuel poverty, transport poverty, and housing poverty as a model for our society and an over reliance on food banks and charities that are becoming overwhelmed as for many the only means of survival.

ʻCurrent and future generations will remember how we, in the sixth richest nation on earth, failed them when there are alternatives. We know we can and should do better.’
