Text of TUC Circular 6 from John Monks Re Fire Dispute

05 September 2005

Circular

TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL
COUNCIL AND GENERAL SECRETARIES
OF ALLAFFILIATED UNIONS

Dear Colleague

FIRE DISPUTE

You will have heard about the breakdown in the talks to resolve the fire dispute caused by the Government’s last minute decision not to sanction the draft agreement.

I enclose a copy of the draft agreement which you will see covers both pay and modernisation. You will note that the FBU was prepared to commit itself to binding adjudication on outstanding modernisation issues and that both parties had a right to invalidate the agreement in the event of a breach by the other. It was, and is, a strong agreement committed to modernisation and with a pay deal actually urged on the FBU by the Deputy Prime Minister in his statement to the Commons yesterday.

The TUC is defending the draft agreement as robust, fair and workable – and is doing all it can to help the FBU in this new, difficult phase of the dispute. I call on all affiliated unions to continue to help the FBU.

Yours sincerely

JOHN MONKS

General Secretary
