Renationalise rail freight

08 June 2016

Train drivers union ASLEF has urged the Labour Party to renationalise the rail freight sector. The union made the call in its response to the party’s policy review.

Commenting on the submission ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan said ‘Labour must renationalise the rail freight sector to ensure a long-term strategic approach to the sector underpinned by investment.’

The union’s call came as figures from the Office of Rail and Road reveal a 22% fall in the amount of rail freight carried in 2015-2016 compared with the previous 12 month period. The amount of freight carried by rail in the UK is now at its lowest since 1984-1985.

Mick added ‘rail freight is in crisis and I fear for the vital role freight plays in maintaining and renewing the whole rail network. Renationalising rail freight will stabilise the industry and bring tremendous economic, social and environmental benefits.’
