ASLEF on the EU vote

24 June 2016

As a trade union which backed a vote to leave the European Union we acknowledge the decision the people of the United Kingdom have taken. ASLEF respects the self-determination of the British people. Today’s verdict reflects the inability of successive governments to meet the aspirations of people particularly in providing affordable housing and secure employment. There has also been a failure to make the case for immigration. These reasons underpinned a deeply divisive referendum campaign. ASLEF will continue to campaign to protect workers’ rights in the UK and abroad and to safeguard our vital public services including the NHS. International solidarity between British workers and European workers existed long before the European Union and will continue long into the future.
