Train service cuts are a betrayal of the travelling public and of government promises, ASLEF general secretary Mick Rix said today (Thursday 16/1/03).

Commenting on the news that over 100 train services a day are being axed on Strategic Rail Authority orders, Mr Rix said:

"This should be the final indictment of the failure of the privatised industry to develop the railways. First we have had service problems blamed on leaves on the line, then the wrong type of snow on the line, now apparently on too many trains on the line.

"This announcement will deeply damage public confidence in the railways. Ministers should act immediately to get the industry back on course for growth."
