Southern 'withdraw' an offer we've already rejected

18 July 2017

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, has spoken out after GTR wrote to our drivers on Southern Rail and Gatwick Express about their 2016 pay deal.

He said: ‘GTR has written to our members – without the courtesy of writing to us as well – to say they are withdrawing the pay offer we rejected last week.

‘How, pray, do you withdraw something that has already been rejected? Our members rejected the deal the company proposed – because of the strings attached about DOO – and now GTR is grandstanding about something we don’t want. And also, of course, trying to bully and blackmail our members as they have tried to do all along.

‘It is, I’m afraid, just another example – in a very long list – of the tactical and strategic blunders by a (mis)management that really doesn’t know what it’s doing.

‘Passengers – and staff – on Southern railways have had enough. We think it’s time for Chris Grayling to step in and sort it out. But, if he won’t do that, then Southern need to get back round the table with us and resolve this long-running dispute.’
