Train drivers welcome government fire safety decision

28 July 2005

ASLEF today welcomed the announcement that the government will not proceed with plans to scrap fire safety regulations covering sub surface stations.

"This is a good decision" said ASLEF national organiser Andy Reed, "It shows that the government will listen to good advice when railway workers, train drivers, passengers and safety experts agree.

"It would have been a mistake to allow management to carry out their own safety monitoring. Maintaining these vital regulations means that the minimum standards introduced following the tragic 1987 Kings Cross fire will stay in place."
