White City

28 July 2005

Commenting on the finding that failures in communication and management lay behind the White City derailment Keith Norman acting general secretary of ASLEF said today: "The lesson of White City is that here is no place for private ownership and profit seeking on the underground.

"Privatisation, and the fragmentation of the railway system that follows, is a continuing disaster.

"The maintenance of the underground system should be carried out by a publicly owned and accountable enterprise."

Steve Grant, ASLEF London district secretary commented:

"Train drivers add their voice to the criticism of Metronet. This is a firm, that for all the rhetoric about partnership, refuses to deal directly with ASLEF but it is train drivers" who have to handle vital equipment that they supply."
