ASLEF slams rip-off parking charges

09 January 2018

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, has condemned the privatised train companies for driving up the cost of parking for hard-pressed passengers. Again.

Mick said: ‘Enough is enough. It’s time to stop squeezing commuters until the pips squeak. Every year the TOCs put up the price of parking for passengers and they’re putting up prices – again – and this time way ahead of inflation. It makes an utter nonsense of park and ride schemes. It’s as if they want to drive people off the railways and on to the roads.

‘Many people are forced to drive their car to the railway station because of a lack of joined-up thinking in public transport, and proper integration with local bus services, as well as a lack of facilities for cyclists.

‘The truth is that the privatised train companies are not in the business of running a public service, but of making as much profit as possible for their shareholders and they regard passengers as sheep waiting to be fleeced.

‘That’s not fair to passengers, who are forced to pay their rip off charges to park; it’s not fair to the taxpayer, who provides all the investment in the railway, anyway; and it’s not fair for the railway, because this business model – the failed franchising system – won’t help our railway and Britain’s economy to grow.’
