Barns Green Tragedy

19 February 2018

ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan has expressed his condolences following the tragic death of Will Hallett, aged 15, and his grandfather Barry Hearnshaw, on a level crossing at Barns Green on Saturday.

Mick commented, “Our heartfelt condolences and thoughts go to the family and friends of Will Hallett and Barry Hearnshaw. Nobody should have to go through what they are going through and I hope they will get the support they need during this difficult time. My thoughts are also with the train crew for whom dealing with fatalities can be a harrowing experience.”

Mick added, “The awful events on Saturday demonstrate why we must do everything possible to reduce the risks at levels crossings. ASLEF has long campaigned for the closure of unnecessary level crossings and for safety improvement where they do remain open. We continue to seek the introduction of full barriers and new technology to help prevent incidents. As an industry we owe it to the traveling public to do everything in our power to make sure the network is a safe as possible.”
