Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s organiser on Croydon Tramlink, said: ‘We welcome that the driver of the tram involved in the tragedy at Sandilands should not face prosecution. He was one of the many victims of this terrible incident that was caused by a lack of adequate safety systems. TfL are now starting to  install an automated braking system that will reduce the chances of a similar incident in future. But it was the collective  failure of TfL and First Tram Operations to recognise the risk of a derailment  rather than the actions of any one individual that caused this crash.'
