ASLEF on the Underground

24 March 2020

Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s organiser on London Underground, told members this morning: "It is a huge relief that the government has done the right thing, at last, and brought in much tighter restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. There are still ambiguities; no clear definition of 'essential'; no clarity on if construction sites will close; but this is a big step forward that will help reduce numbers travelling on the Underground.

"ASLEF members are public servants. We have a public duty to help save lives by keeping a basic service running. All of us will be judged by what we do in these days. I know that is much easier for me to say than it is for you who are on the frontline. I have always believed that everyone who drives a train or helps keep the Tube running is a hero. Today the whole country should recognise that.

"I know there are problems to be solved and other issues to be resolved. And we will do our best to get all outstanding problems resolved as quickly as we can. But, for today, I just want to say thank you to every NHS worker, every transport worker, every supermarket and food distribution worker, every teacher, every cleaner, and all the others we are relying on to keep our families safe and well.

"Stay safe and keep well, brothers and sisters."
