Hull Trains

31 March 2020

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers' trade union, has spoken out after the DfT's decision not to help out Hull Trains.

Mick said: "As a trade union, we have seen this as not a time for political points scoring. Our views on privatisation are well known. But the decision made by the Department for Transport not to support Hull Trains in the same way as the recognised train operating companies goes against the spirit of working together to keep key personnel, and vital goods, moving at this time of national crisis.

"The message to those in the geographical areas impacted is not what is needed at this time. This is not solely about the drivers and other railway workers impacted but the communities we serve. The least the government can do is confirm that the necessary support, if it cannot be given now, will be there when this crisis is over, to get these trains running again.”
