Members - your photographs wanted

11 August 2020

As ASLEF takes advantage of the opportunities of digital and social media channels, we're able to communicate to a much wider audience and get our messages across.

The best online content is visual so we are using more photographs and images than ever, and we want to keep up this high quality.

The union has access to stock photography but we are also opening a call to members for your photographs. We know there are a lot of members who enjoy photography as a hobby and have many images of the railway, train drivers and other associated events.

ASLEF pays professional photographers and artists for images we commission. This call out isn't intending to avoid paying professionals for their work, it's just an opportunity for the union to make use of images that members have available, particularly that tell the kind of stories we wouldn't necessarily be able to provide a photographer to access.

Some of the types of images that could be used are: members at events, drivers in cabs or with rolling stock (taken ONLY in safe and authorised conditions), stations, rolling stock or other elements of the railway like freight interchange or level crossings.

We are interested in both modern and historic photographs.

If you have any photographs that you would like to make available for ASLEF's use, you are invited to send them to the policy & communications department.

For digital files, photographs should be a minimum of 1200x1800px and in jpeg or tiff format.

As we will need to store and catalogue images, please also include with any submissions:

- The subject of the image, including the names of any people shown

- The date of the image

- Any other relevant details

Please avoid sending multiple versions of very similar images, or images which are blurred, out of focus or very dark.

By sending in your photographs, you agree that ASLEF can use them in print or online, including cropping, overlay and editing, and that you will not seek or be entitled to any financial compensation for the use of images.

To submit your images, you can email them to Jen ( or send by a WeTransfer/Dropbox/GoogleDrive link to the same email address.
