International unions to launch AIDS campaign

14 August 2006

The International Transport Federation (ITF) has voted to prepare a worldwide campaign against HIV/Aids that will be launched on World Aids Day, 1 December.

Andy Reed, leader of the ASLEF delegation to the ITF conference, says it will aim to combat the spread of the virus, and provide care and support to AIDS sufferers and their families.

‘It is not only a medical problem – the spread of AIDS is the result of social, economic and political factors. Transport workers can play a vital part to play in halting its growth.’

The ITF is convinced that its affiliates can make a difference and keep transport workers and their families across the world healthy and safe from HIV/Aids by a combination of education, awareness programmes, rallies and voluntary counselling and testing facilities.
