Union to ballot members in First Great Western

19 May 2006

The ASLEF executive committee has resolved to ballot its driver members in First Great Western, recommending support for a series of 24 hour discontinuous strikes. The company is accused of deliberately ignoring aspects of the 2004 pay deal and changing conditions of service without negotiations.

The union says it has ‘come up against a brick wall’ in its attempts to negotiate on a series of issues including 104 Rest Days, cross cover agreements and the transferring of work. District Organiser Stan Moran told the executive that he had taken a number of issues through all the formal machinery available to him – but that the company appeared to have no intention of coming to agreements. The executive deemed this ‘totally unacceptable’ behaviour by the company.

The General Secretary will write to the company giving the necessary legal notification of the ballot which will conclude on 21 June.
