Mick Whelan has welcomed the endorsement for HS2 from the House of Commons Select Committee on Transport. MPs on the select committee say the project is ‘essential’ for the country’s future and the potential gains ‘significantly outweigh’ any risks.

Mick Whelan has spoken out after new figures revealed that commuters are spending a quarter of their salaries on getting to work. New research by the Hay Group, a management consultancy, shows that workers in Birmingham are parting with 23% of their annual income on travelling by train to their job, and those in London are paying nearly as much.
