Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, has responded to today’s speech by George Osborne that the north of England needs a new HS3 high speed rail link between Manchester and Leeds. Mick said: ‘While we welcome all, and any, investment in the railways in this country, because Britain needs a modern, integrated, railway fit for the 21st century, where is the time line, where is the money, and where is the strategic thinking?

ASLEF backs SEKO

ASLEF has sent a message of support and solidarity to SEKO (Facket för Service och Kommunikation) the public service and communication union in Sweden, which is engaged in a bitter dispute with Veolia Transport Sweden, part of the international Transdev group (formerly Connex in the UK).

Chicken feed for Rail Supply Group

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, has responded to today’s announcement that the newly-formed Rail Supply Group is to get £500,000 to help the UK rail supply chain ‘secure new business at home and internationally’. The Department for Transport said: ‘Rail industry suppliers are set to benefit from government investment to help them win new business, create jobs and generate economic growth.’
